Rolling Advertisement Inviting Application for Ph. D. Programme at

UM-DAE CEBS

The University of Mumbai-Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE CEBS) was established in 2007 as a joint venture between Department of Atomic Energy and the University of Mumbai to impart value-based high-quality integrated post graduate education in the Basic Sciences. The Center is located at Kalina Campus of the University. The students are admitted to CEBS after the 12th standard or equivalent examination on the basis of a nationwide entrance test called National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) and are mentored in a vibrant academic ambiance by distinguished professors and scientists. DAE and DST offer DISHA and INSPIRE scholarships, respectively to CEBS students.

The Centre has established excellent organic linkages with the University Departments and Constituent Colleges. One of the hall marks of CEBS is its Visitors' program. Visiting and Adjunct faculty coming from proximate research institutions (BARC, TIFR, IIT(Bobmay), University of Mumbai, etc.) contribute immensely to the teaching and research programs at the Centre. All the degrees to CEBS students are awarded by the University of Mumbai. Recently, the Ph. D. program has also been introduced in the Centre. Following research areas are currently pursued at UM-DAE-CEBS

School/ Discipline

Research areas

School of Chemical Sciences

Pd-based catalysts for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds; synthetic organometallic chemistry; Laser matter interactions; theoretical and computational chemistry; materials for OLED and OPV devices;investigations on drug-protein interactions, bio-physical chemistry (Screening of small molecules against drug-resistant malaria targeting actin polymerization mechanism and Plasmepsin-II in Plasmodium; prevention of protein aggregation and infectious diseases by natural and synthetic inhibitors; molecular mechanism of amyloid fibril formation and disaggregation) development of ultra-high-resolution NMR methods and their applications in chemistry and biology, etc.

School of Physical Sciences

superconductivity and magnetism of low dimensional thin films; nanoscale optoelectronics and plasmonics, CNT, graphene and large area single crystaldiamonds for detectors using MPCVD process; computational studies of intense Laser-matter interaction and plasma astrophysics; radio-astronomy; nuclear astrophysics; spectroscopic studies of isomers, shapes and high-spin states focused on heavy nuclei; gravitation and cosmology, theoretical physics, etc.

School of Biological Sciences

Ciliary dysfunction and Human disease biology; Strategic design of potential therapeutic formulations against breast cancer;characterization of algal polysaccharides and elucidating the mechanism involved in combating biofilm formation; etc.

School of Mathematical Sciences

Study of the topology of function spaces between certain homogeneous spaces. Investigation of the Homotopy Theory of such Function Spaces, Calculation of the possible Brouwer degree of maps between certain homogeneous spaces; Investigation into the inter-relationships among sub-integrality, invertible modules, the Picard group and Witt vectors; Study of dynamics on homogeneous spaces of Lie groups and their applications to Diophantine approximation, etc.

Those who are interested to pursue their Pd. D. work at UM-DAE-CEBS may send their applications any time during the year.
